On Ramen’s recall

By Maya Devereaux, Staff Writer

Hearing all over the news recently that rice contains high levels of arsenic has made me seriously bummed. But hearing that my second dietary staple food, ramen, is being recalled makes me downright sad. Really?

Thanks to the Korean government, Nongshim Ramen (aka the manufacturer of all good ramen) is found to contain the carcinogenic chemical benzopyrene. For those of you who want to know, benzopyrene is a carcinogen that can be found in well-done foods and has been linked to lung cancer. It doesn’t seem like a big deal for most, but some of us college kids eat this magical stuff more than a few times a week.

Nonetheless, according to the Korean Food and Drug Administration, only six of Nongshim’s products have been taintedand can be identified by expiration date. So, maybe if you remember the expiration date of theĀ Saengsaeng Udon Bowl you devoured three weeks ago, you’ll be okay. Wait a minute…. expiration date? Since when does ramen have an expiration date? I thought ramen lasted months and months. In other words, is this frightening? A little. Is this going to stop us all from eating this yummy and cheap delight? Absolutely not.
