Pop Culture Countdown: Prince George on US Weekly and “Parks and Recreation” season finale

By Danny McCarthy, Staff Writer
@thedanosaurus

Hello! Welcome to the Countdown, where we discuss some of the things that happened this week in Pop Culture! Are you excited? Of course you are! Let’s get down to business!

6. Us Weekly is accused of photoshopping a picture of baby Prince George:

I can’t believe that this is really happening. The photo was originally taken at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia. The original photo shows Prince George with dark eyes, pale cheeks and brown hair, but his Us Weeklydoppelganger blushed on the cover with rosy cheeks, and lighter eyes and hair. I know that airbrushing is not uncommon, but I feel like if anyone could get away without some tweaking, it would be a baby.

5. Katy Perry releases the music video for “Birthday”:

The music video for Katy Perry’s song “Birthday” was released this week, and it was … interesting. The video follows Perry as she dresses up like five distinctive characters and proceeds to ruin five separate birthday parties. She grinds up on geriatric men, eats mice and causes a car accident. But it’s all good, because in the end she revealed her true identity and everyone went cray-cray! The song definitely takes a different direction from Perry’s usual “cupcakes and sparkles” persona. The star, who recently revealed that she’s on Tinder, showed her pranking side in this music video, and it wasn’t the worst.

4. Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis welcome baby Otis:

Aww! I love it when cool celebrities have kids together; it means that I have more cool celebrities to look forward to in the future! Sudeikis and Wilde, who started dating in 2011 and got engaged in January 2013, welcomed their first child together, Otis Alexander, this week. Wilde revealed her due date on the Golden Globes red carpet, telling Ryan Seacrest, “May the fourth be with you!” Well, it looks like baby Otis isn’t a huge Star Wars fan, because he came early! Congratulations to the whole Sudeikis-Wilde family and hello to baby Otis!

3. One Direction releases the “You and I” music video:

Another music video this week (and spoiler alert, we’re not finished). One Direction’s “You and I” music video, from their album Midnight Memories, came out and it has already stirred up some controversy. I didn’t realize at first, due to being mesmerized by Liam’s cool new beard and Louis’ gross, old-man hair, but the video is strikingly similar to Clubfoot’s “Everything You Wanted.” The use of digital effects and overall feel of the two music videos are very similar. While no one has filed for any sort of creative infringement lawsuits, Clubfoot is asking fans to tweet at One Direction with #nodirection to bring the issue to 1D’s attention. What do you think? Too similar or just too much drama?

2. Beyoncé releases the “Pretty Hurts” music video to the world:

So this might not be news if you’ve already bought the classic album, but if you haven’t, bask in the glory of “Pretty Hurts,” the first song off Beyoncé’s titular album. And since it’s Beyoncé, we think any news of hers is breaking news. The video is visually stunning and thematically powerful. It shows the ups and downs of judging yourself based off looks, and Beyoncé, who is poked, prodded and evaluated throughout the entire video, is having none of it. Beyoncé released the video in conjunction to her appearance on this year’s cover of TIME for the issue on the most influential people in the world. With the release, Beyoncé is asking all of us to reconsider what we call “pretty,” and what the word should really mean. Beyoncé, as always, you are my queen. Thank you.

1. “Parks and Recreation” had its sixth season finale:

The NBC hit “Parks and Recreation” wrapped up its sixth season, and it was a majestic whirlwind of emotions. Now, this one is a major spoiler alert, so don’t read any further if you haven’t watched the episode! The last few episodes of the sixth season have been impressive enough: Leslie is revealed to be pregnant with triplets, the Unity Concert is drawing closer, and Leslie’s deadline to make a decision about leaving Pawnee for a new job inches closer. In the finale, a lot of these questions are answered, and it threw me through a loop. The Unity Concert is a success (as we knew it would be), and Leslie manages to get the National Parks Service job and stay in Pawnee (and we knew she should) but then there’s a three year TIME JUMP ! That’s right! The seventh season of “Parks and Rec” will take place three years into the future, skipping over the bogging-down “Leslie pregnancy” story line and showing Leslie like she always has been: kicking ass, taking names and balancing everything. I cannot wait for the new season to start.

Three music videos, a season finale, a little prince and a little baby! Wow, what a week it’s been! I hope you had fun reading the Countdown this week, and I hope you watch all the videos and episodes I’ve talked about. Anyway, I better get going. So much to do (aka Netflix to watch), so little time. Goodbye!

Pop Culture Countdown: “Gone Girl” trailer and Biden joins Instagram

By Danny McCarthy, Staff Writer
@thedanosaurus

Hey there! How was your week? Did you do that thing? You didn’t? I can’t believe you, this is so typical. You always overcommit and then never fulfill anything. Well, I guess there is one thing you can do to redeem yourself. You can keep reading and find out what happened this week in pop culture!

7. Emma Stone got pranked over the Spice Girls:

Emma Stone loves the Spice Girls, and I love that Emma Stone loves the Spice Girls. In fact, it’s such common knowledge that when Emma appeared on “The Graham Norton Show,” the host couldn’t help but prank her. Although the Spice Girls have been mentioned quite a lot on the “Amazing Spider-Man 2” press tour, like when she told Jimmy Kimmel she could forge all their signatures, Stone hasn’t met one in the flesh. “As you know Stone, it’s very rare for more than one Spice Girl to appear together for any reason at all,” teased Norton to the flair of a drum roll. “So, they’re not here.” And safe to say, Stone was heartbroken.

6. Gone Girl” movie trailer:

The trailer for the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s psychological thriller “Gone Girl” hit the internet this week. Now, I watched the trailer, and found myself wanting more. Obviously the trailer can’t give away the plot twists that gave “Gone Girl” its cult-ish, fervent following, but I still felt like it didn’t pack a punch in the way it needed to. What do you think? How do you set up the movie trailer for a psychological thriller without revealing the big twist? Are you going to see “Gone Girl”? Can we go together? (Disclaimer, I talk throughout movies).

5. Taylor Swift surprises a fan at her bridal shower:

Sometimes, Taylor Swift amazes even cynical old me. The Red singer showed up at the wedding shower of longtime fan Gena Gabrielle in Ohio. Gabrielle mailed Swift an invitation to her wedding as a long shot. Swift couldn’t make the wedding, but that didn’t stop her from stopping by the shower. Gabrielle had no idea, and I can’t imagine the shock and happiness the bride-to-be was feeling when her favorite singer walked in with presents. Swift has been stopping by to visit fans a lot recently. In March, she visited 17-year-old Shelby Huff, who has cancer. Swift spent 4.5 hours at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and 20 minutes with Huff. Thank you, Swift, for being a grade-A good person. I appreciate it.

4. Joe Biden joins Instagram:

Vice President Joe Biden has joined Instagram and immediately slayed all the competition. His first picture was effortlessly artsy, with a pair of Ray-Ban aviators front and center and himself blurred in the background. He also posted a selfie with President Barack Obama, and the world fell to pieces at the awesomeness of the moment. Biden already has almost 120,000 followers on the social media outlet, with no doubt of the number growing. And you know what? I’m not even mad. Rock on, Joe Biden. Rock on.

3. Lana Dey Rey’s new song “West Coast”:

Lana Del Rey debuted her new song “West Coast” at Coachella this year. The song will be on her upcoming album Ultraviolence, which was announced in December. “West Coast” is the second new original song for Del Rey to release. Her first, “Meet Me in the Pale Moonlight,” has since been taken offline. The new song is expected to debut in the upper half of Billboard’s Hot 100. Lana has been rapidly gaining followers, and her appearance at Coachella and anticipation for her new music whipping people into a frenzy for her.

2. Miley Cyrus gets hospitalized for allergic reaction:

Miley Cyrus has been hospitalized after a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics. Cyrus has taken to Twitter to express her displeasure over canceling Bangerz shows, but the star has rescheduled some of her canceled shows. The European tour is scheduled to go on as planned, but the U.S. tours are a little more touch and go. Cyrus is trying to keep in good spirits despite being hospitalized, posting tweets, hospital selfies and making jokes. The past month has been tough on Cyrus, and I hope she gets better soon!

1. Jay-Z and Beyoncé on a summer tour:

Could it be true? According to various sources, Beyoncé and Jay-Z are planning a summer stadium tour! The tour will go from June to August, taking them from Atlanta to San Francisco, with a few stops in Paris next September. Although not officially confirmed, the timing works out: Jay-Z finished his Magna Carta tour in January, and Beyoncé wrapped up her Mrs. Carter tour in March. The summer stadium tour could be the perfect thing to get them back into the tour-game. For the sake of all humanity, I hope this summer tour turns out to be true!

That’s all I’ve got! Tell me down below if I missed anything. What do you think? Will Emma Stone ever meet the Spice Girls? Will Taylor Swift and I become best friends? Will Cyrus ever get better? Will Beyonce and Jay-Z go on tour? Only time will tell!

Pop Culture Countdown: Colbert inherits “Late Show” and new Poehler-Fey movie

By Danny McCarthy, Staff Writer
@thedanosaurus

With the thrum of Spring in full swing, it’s easy to believe that the end of school is nigh! But fear not, because although the semester is winding down, the world of pop culture will never die as long as there are people to care about celebrity Instagrams (aka me). So as is my duty and pleasure, let’s get down to “bidness.”

6. Prince George had a play-date in New Zealand:

We’re starting off with the King of Cute and the Duke of Darling: Prince George! At his first royal engagement since his birth, the little prince went on a play date with the children of notable dignitaries in New Zealand. The parents were all first-timers like Will and Kate, and included both single mothers and same-sex couples. The tiny future King of England was adorable in an overall onesie and is possibly the only person who can trump his glamorous mother, Kate Middleton! I’m looking forward to a lot of cute photo-ops in the future!

5. Stephen Colbert set to replace David Letterman:

We knew that when David Letterman announced his retirement, we could start expecting a flurry of potential replacements in the late night world. And it came as a bit of a surprise when Stephen Colbert of “The Colbert Report” was announced as Letterman’s successor. The shock mostly comes out of Colbert’s distinctive style and comedy, which has some people wondering how it will translate to the iconic late night show. Colbert has assured us that the show will not be done in any sort of “character” and that the public will get to see him being himself. I’m looking forward to Colbert and his take on “The Late Show.”

4. Anne Hathaway and Jimmy Fallon Broadway-ify Rap Songs:

So this is the thing that I never knew I needed until I discovered it. Anne Hathaway and Jimmy Fallon sang show tunes versions of rap songs. It is times like these that I am reminded that Hathaway, despite her impressive repertoire of serious roles, can easily change into a comedic actress. It’s a nice reminder, especially when it comes wrapped up in a Broadway ribbon of “In Da Club.” Brava, Anne Hathaway. Brava!

3. “Games of Thrones” premiere crashes HBO Go website:

Is winter coming? You should probably ask the cast of “Game of Thrones” in their fourth season premiere on Sunday. The hit show, which has captivated audiences with its complex story-lines, nuanced characters and sweet amount of naked butts, premiered on the HBO Go website. The colossal amount of traffic, about 6.6 million people tuning in, promptly crashed the site. The newest premiere marks the largest audience yet, up from 4.5 million in 2013. Word of mouth made “Game of Thrones” popular, and it seems like the fire has not diminished.

2. Miley Cyrus gets a new dog and a magazine cover:

The past week has been quite the roller coaster for Cyrus. Last Tuesday, her beloved dog Floyd passed away. But now she has a new puppy to ease the pain. Her mother, Tish Cyrus, got her an adorable pooch named Moonie. But sometimes a new love cannot dull old pain. Cyrus is grieving for Floyd, and her new Elle cover showcases her sad side. In the photoshoot, Cyrus rarely cracks a smile, preferring to smolder sullenly in beautiful Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Louboutin pieces. While the photos turned out stunning, we miss our fresh and wildly fierce Miley Cyrus.

1. Amy Poehler’s new Old Navy commercial & teaming up with Tina Fey for movie:

Amy Poehler and Old Navy have teamed up again and the result is glorious. In the newest ad, Poehler is grilling a woman in an Old Navy dress while making the worst burrito of all time. Poehler is also due to team up with bestie Tina Fey for a new movie called “The Nest,” which will feature the two comediennes as sisters having one last party in their childhood home. If their last project together, “Baby Mama,” is any indicator, this movie will be amazing.

That’s all for this week. If there was anything I missed, put it in the comment section below!

Pop Culture Countdown: Snooki pregnant again and the “HIMYM” finale

By Danny McCarthy, Staff Writer
@thedanosaurus

Hey there, terriers! How was your week? Terrierific? Terrierble? I can’t think of a third “terrier” pun, so we’ll end that train of thought there. Spring has most definitely sprung, and I couldn’t be happier. So let’s celebrate quickly because we all know that eventually it will be winter again in Boston, and that thought is terrifying — I guess I did have another “terrier” pun. Nailed it.

6. Kesha performs for the first time post-rehab:

Yay! Kesha is back, and I love it. The star has dropped the “$” from her name and seems to be pursuing a more natural vibe. She performed in the Best Fest’s Petty Fest at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. The performance comes on the heels of her first post-rehab red carpet appearance at the Humane Society Benefit Gala, where she looked healthy and beautiful, glowing in a sparkly dress. Kesha went into rehab seeking treatment for an eating disorder, and ended up staying two months. While a proponent for loving yourself, Kesha found it difficult to practice, and we love her for putting her physical and mental health first. Welcome back, Kesha!

5. David Letterman announces retirement:

David Letterman, the longest-running late night host in TV history, is ending his 30-year reign in 2015 when his contract expires. The decision is something that he has been discussing with CBS president/CEO Les Moonves, and it’s not entirely unexpected. Last year, Letterman renewed his contract for only one year, leading many to speculate that the end was near. His departure will leave a hole in the heart of television as we say goodbye to this late night staple. There has been no word yet on who will potentially succeed Letterman.

4. Snooki is pregnant again:

Nicole Polizzi is expecting her second child with fiancé Jionni LaValle. The news came shortly after it was revealed that her best friend, Jenni Farley, is expecting a baby girl with her fiancé Roger. Polizzi and Farley appear on their show “Snooki & JWOWW” together, and always planned to be pregnant together. Snooki didn’t release the knowledge of her pregnancy to the public until her second trimester, but the news was leaked by an undisclosed source to the press. Polizzi is already the mother to Lorenzo Dominic, 19 months,  and wanted for her children to be close in age to each other.

3. “How I Met Your Mother” Finale:

It came, we saw, and it conquered our emotions. The finale to the long-running, intensely addicting, wildly popular “How I Met Your Mother” ended on March 31, 2014. Have you recovered yet? The finale was controversial, and if you didn’t like it, you may have a second chance at the ending. The creators of the show, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, announced that there will be an alternate ending to the series. “We were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings,” Bays tweeted, “We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too.” The alternate ending will be released with the DVD set of the show’s last season.

2. Lupita Nyong’o is the new face of Lancome:

My queen, Lupita Nyong’o, was named the newest face of Lancome, becoming the first black woman to represent the French brand! It’s coming as no surprise that Nyong’o has been tapped to represent the luxury brand: her fashion statements are almost as talked about as her films, and her red carpet style choices have become iconic. Nyong’o has always loved the company, and adores its idea that “beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself.”

1. Miley Cyrus in Boston:

If Lupita is my queen, then Miley Cyrus is my religion. She came to Boston Wednesday night on her Bangerz tour, and by all accounts, the show was a watershed moment. Miley’s dog Floyd died two days previous to the show and the singer was distraught, taking to Twitter to voice her heartbreaking sadness. However, she promised to “try her best to be her best” for her Boston fans and she did not disappoint. Although the evening was fraught with sadness and a tear-jerking moment when Miley broke down and clutched a massive blow-up version of Floyd, she never ceased in her desire to put on an amazing show. Opinions on Miley are split, but I think we can all agree that her performance Wednesday night showed her strength, bravery and beauty. Miley, I applaud you.

Pop Culture Countdown: Beyoncé cries and another space movie starring Channing Tatum

By Danny McCarthy, Staff Writer
@thedanosaurus

Welcome to Monday! It may have been a rainy weekend, but it’s all toasty warm in pop culture land! So kick up your feet and settle in for a while as we talk about everything that you might’ve missed in the last week!

6. Chris Martin & Gwyneth Paltrow selling their London home:

In the aftermath of going public with their split, Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin are reportedly selling their $7 million London home. The pair have been working on their marriage for roughly a year, and despite rumors swirling of infidelity on the side of Paltrow, they insist the break-up is amicable. Paltrow also announced that she will be taking time off from Hollywood to be with her children and deal with the effects of the split.

5. Selena Gomez served with papers in Justin Bieber’s lawsuit:

Looks like Selena is being dragged into Justin’s legal mess! The beautiful brunette was served with court papers. She will testify in the lawsuit centering around Bieber’s alleged assault on a paparazzo while on a date with Gomez. However, Gomez could be grilled on more than just that one incident. Possible topics include Bieber’s use of illegal substances and any incidents of violence or anger.

4. New “Jupiter Ascending” trailer:

Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, released a new trailer, and it’s drawing me in! With the scenes of a vast galactic empire and some pretty sick fights — involving a wolfish Tatum — I’m excited for the film to be released in July. The film was directed by the Wachowskis, who brought us the Matrix films. It centers on Jupiter, played by Kunis, who is the next in line for a celestial throne, and the great battle to achieve her birthright. Pretty cool, right?

3. Zoe Saldana named the new face of L’Oreal:

Zoe Saldana is having one hell of a year! The Star Trek actress will be involved with the “Avatar” sequel, a NBC adaptation of “Rosemary’s Baby,” and now she joins the likes of Blake Lively and Lea Michele as L’Oreal Paris’s newest spokesmodel. Saldana was humbled by the offer, and credits her success to her family’s work ethic. We can’t wait to see the gorgeous L’Oreal pictures featuring the beauty!

2. Beyoncé cries at the last Mrs. Carter show:

If it were possible for the entire world to love Beyoncé more, it would be this moment. At her last show of 132 shows on her Mrs. Carter tour, Beyoncé humbly thanked her fans for giving her a career and lifting her up every time she fell. It is amazing to see a celebrity of Beyoncé’s stature acknowledge the power and special place of the fans in the making of fame. The past year of the tour has been a huge step for Beyoncé: the growth of her daughter Blue Ivy, and the release of her secret fifth album, BEYONCÉ.

1. Emma Watson “Noah” premiere; graduation in May:

Okay, full disclosure: this is my number 1 because I’ve been re-obsessed with the “Harry Potter” series lately and Emma Watson is my British queen. At the “Noah premiere, Watson revealed that she is due to graduate from Brown University in May, and she couldn’t be happier! She finished her degree in five years, balancing both the pressures of schoolwork and cinema. Emma says that graduating will free up her time considerably and, after filming her new movie “Regression,” she would love to break out on Broadway. Congrats, Watson!

Okay, so that’s all for this week! If there’s anything I missed, or anything you want to chime in on, feel free to comment down below!

Pop Culture Countdown: Kimye Vogue cover and 1D fan double date

By Danny McCarthy, Staff Writer
@thedanosaurus

6. Amanda Bynes at the FIDM runway show:

2014 is starting to look like a year of redemption for wayward former child stars, and I love it! Amanda Bynes, who went through a series of unbelievable personal problems, was spotted at the FIDM — Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising — Debut Runway Show. She has dropped the fake wigs and cheek piercings and looked happy and healthy in glowing blonde locks alongside her parents, Rick and Lynn. Amanda seems to be doing well at FIDM, and I couldn’t be happier for her. Hopefully 2014 will help Amanda on her road to recovery!

5. Kimye’s Vogue cover:

Screenshot of James Franco's official Instagram spoof of the Kimye Vogue cover, taken on March 23, 2014.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West appeared together on the cover of Vogue, because they are taking over the world and I can’t stop it. Apparently Kardashian has finally garnered the approval of Anna Wintour, because there is no way that she would ever step foot into the Vogue office without Wintour giving her explicit permission. I think Wintour is the only one who can stand up to Kardashian, the Joker to her Batman. The photoshoot was shot by Annie Leibovitz, and featured a very matrimonial-looking Kim in the arms of a suited Kanye, which led to tons of spoofs, like James Franco and Seth Rogen. Of course, Twitter hated it and erupted into a million angry Tweets, but really, Kimye got the last laugh because Vogue. Vogue always wins.

4. One Direction fan double date:

One Direction’s Liam Payne and Harry Styles went on a double date with two lucky (understatement of the century) fans. The girls won a contest and were flown to London, where they got vouchers — worth $750 — to spend on the famous Carnaby Street before having a dinner date with the 1D members. The girls haven’t commented publicly on it, but literally what could they say other than, “It was amazing.” There are no other outcomes. The fan date was a first for One Direction, and hopefully it wasn’t the last.

3. Chris Hemsworth welcomes twin sons:

Well, the world just got a little cuter! Chris Hemsworth and wife Elsa Pataky are the proud parents of twin sons. The Thor actor is over the moon, and the boys join big sister India Rose, 22 months. There is no word yet on names, but mom and babies are doing well. Hemsworth is not shy about loving fatherhood, and says that when he’s at work, all he thinks of is India, and when he’s at home, all he does is play with her! Congratulations to the Hemsworth family and its newest members!

2. Prince George’s nanny is revealed:

The baby prince has a new woman in his life, and she is a certified badass. His nanny, Maria Theresa Turrion Borrallo, was trained at Norland College, where she became certified in taekwondo and escape driving. Her appointment to the prestigious position has gathered some friction as she is not British but a native Spaniard, but William and Kate are not known for their adherence to tradition. The need for a nanny is coming off the heels of the announcement that Will and Kate will be going on a month-long tour of Australia and New Zealand.

1. Divergent movie release:

Okay, so I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I am super excited about it! The book was awesome and Shailene Woodley is my queen. Oh, you don’t know what I’m talking about? Divergent was released this past Friday, to both much laudation and much criticism. Let’s face it, Divergent is no Hunger Games, but frankly I don’t see why that should matter. The Washington Post argued that the movie was better than the book — a bold claim — and backed up its position by saying that the movie trimmed some of the lethargic fat of the book. While I can’t personally comment on the movie, I will say that the book did have moments that don’t translate as well on the big screen, so I’ll be interested to see which scenes made it and which got the ax. If you saw the movie let me know what you thought!

Pop Culture Countdown: Mayer-Perry Break-Up and “That 70s Show” Engagement

By Danny McCarthy, Staff Writer
@thedanosaurus

Brrr it’s cold outside, but it’s nice and toasty in Pop Culture Land. So slip under a blanket, grab some hot cocoa and read about what’s happened in the past week!

7. Ben and Jerry’s Core Ice Cream:

If this isn’t a culinary breakthrough, then I don’t know what is. Ben and Jerry’s released their new ice cream adventure, which includes “a core center of fudge, caramel or real raspberry jam.” The cores are designed to complement the two ice creams that accompany it in the pint. All I can say is that I’m going to be very fat unless someone heavily regulates me. I think that the Core could be either the best or worst thing to happen to ice cream.

6. Michelle Dockery won’t leave Downton Abbey:

At least there’s something you can depend on in this world! Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary on the PBS hit Downton Abbey, revealed on a UK talk show that she has no plans to leave the show before it ends. “I am sticking with the show for however long the producers want it to go,” Dockery said, leading to a chorus of revealed sighs from Downton fans. This appears to be a valid question as Dockery’s film career has been picking up recently. She will appear in the upcoming film Nonstop alongside Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore and Lupita Nyong’o.

5. Katy Perry and John Mayer break up:

The Prism star and her on-and-off boyfriend of two years, singer John Mayer, have decided to call it quits again. The news comes after sparks were flying about a possible Mayer-Perry engagement. According to an inside source, it was Perry’s choice but the split was “extremely amicable.” Perry got together with Mayer after her divorce from comedian Russell Brand. But Perry appears to be moving on, sporting a jet-black blunt-bang bob and looking ferocious. Sound off below: do you think Perry has the “eye of the tiger” or is a “plastic bag drifting through the wind”?

4. Gabriel Macht has a baby boy:

Maybe this is why the Suits star didn’t come to the Boston University premiere! Word has just gotten out that Macht and wife Jacinda Barrett welcomed a little boy named Luca into the world on February 26! The couple, married in 2004, already has a daughter Satine, 6, and a dog named Lucky. We hope that mother and baby are doing great, and congratulate the whole Macht family on the new addition!

3. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher get engaged:

Their kids will be unfairly gorgeous. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who played Kelso and Jackie, respectively, on “That 70s Show,” are reportedly engaged. The pair, who have remained quiet about their relationship, were spotted together with a diamond ring on Kunis’s finger. The two have known each other for years, Kutcher was Kunis’s first kiss! After Kutcher’s divorce from actress Demi Moore, he began spending more time with Kunis, showing that life can, and does, mirror art. Hopefully they have a long, happy life together.

2. Matt Peterson and Miley Cyrus:

This makes me love Miley even more. After turning down a prom date from a super fan, Miley Cyrus invited Matt Peterson personally to her Arizona show. Peterson showed up in a suit covered in tongues, and posed with Cyrus prom-style. Years ago, Peterson met Cyrus after winning a contest, and only a few months later called him out at one of her concerts. So, naturally, when the time came for Peterson to think of a prom date, he reached out to Miley. In a video that has almost one million views, Peterson recalls all of the good times they’ve had before asking Cyrus to prom.

1. Lea Michele’s “If You Say So”:

Lea Michele’s new song “If You Say So” has found its way to the Internet. The song contains the last words ever spoken to her by her boyfriend and late actor Cory Monteith, who tragically passed away in July of last 2013. The touching song is one of the only songs that Monteith never heard from Michele’s new album, Louder. The song graces over the pain of losing Monteith and the things they talked about, like growing old together. The powerful ballad is a beautiful reminder of Monteith’s legacy, both personally and professionally.

Stay classy, stay pop culture-y, and stay sharp! Until next week!

Pop Culture Countdown: “Fantastic Four” Remake and “Camp Takota” on iTunes

By Danny McCarthy, Staff Writer
@thedanosaurus

I can’t believe it’s a new week already. But forget about those Monday blues, and focus on all the jazzy, exciting things that happened last week! Seriously, so jazzy!

7. Luna the rescued cat:

We’re starting off this countdown with an ‘awww,’ because I’m talking about an adorable little kitten and man who became her savior. The man, only known by his imgur username hiblue, found the “skin and bones” kitten, now named “Luna,” in an industrial area and decided to feed her. Before long, Luna had snuggled up to him and, in a split decision, he decided to take her home. After a lot of food, a flea bath and a melted heart, hiblue and Luna became inseparable. This good Samaritan and his adorable cat prove that there is still some good in the world.

6. “Fantastic Four” cast revealed:

The cast for “The Fantastic Four” reboot has been released, and they are looking reboot-iful (nailed that pun, am I right?). Michael B. Jordan is slated to appear as the Human Torch, alongside Kate Mara as the Invisible Woman, Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic and Jamie Bell as the Thing.

All the actors are relatively new to the young Hollywood scene. Teller is a  recent rising star in “Divergent” and “The Spectacular Now,” and Kate Mara, sister of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” actress Rooney Mara, is a familiar, albeit at times underappreciated face. The young actors are taking up the mantle of a major franchise, so hopefully this reboot doesn’t fall flat. Sound off in the comments and let me know what you think of the cast!

5. New “Divergent” trailer:

I’m doing a little happy dance, because I love the “Divergent” trilogy, and I’m completely jazzed for the movie, set to release on March 21st. The latest trailer sent chills up my spine, watching Kate Winslet and Shailene Woodley go head to head as Jeanine Matthews and Tris Prior. Woodley has been tearing up the news lately, and will also appear in the film adaption of “The Fault In Our Stars” as Hazel Grace Lancaster. But before she graces the silver screen as the “V for Vendetta” lookalike in the John Green bestseller, she’s gonna kick some ass as Tris Prior, the “Divergent” hero.

4. “Dark Horse” music video:

Katy Perry’s sleeper hit “Dark Horse,” released as a single off her fourth album Prism, is a bit of a dark horse itself. Originally overlooked as bigger songs—“Unconditionally” and “Roar”—took the spotlight, “Dark Horse” has bided its time and risen to the top.

The music video was released on Feb. 20th and it’s…interesting, to say the least. The video is set in “Memphis, Egypt, a crazy long time ago,” and showcases Perry as a stunning reimagining of Cleopatra. Although the music video departs from the mature vibe Prism has been taking, it is classic Katy in its cotton-candy color and eccentric feel.

3. Leighton Meester and Adam Brody get married:

Two beautiful people got married to each other, and the rest of us peasants are still single! Leighton Meester (of “Gossip Girl” and “The Roommate”) and Adam Brody (of “The O.C.,” “Gilmore Girls,” and “The Romantics”) were married in a private, northern California wedding earlier this month.

The pair, who never confirmed they were even a couple, managed to keep the wedding a secret by staying off social media and venturing away from Los Angeles. It’s so refreshing to see a Hollywood couple actually get to enjoy their special day without the buzzing of the paparazzi from behind the wedding cake. Hopefully Leighton and Adam have a long, fruitful marriage, because Lord knows Blair Waldorf deserves a little peace.

2. “Camp Takota” released on iTunes:

Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes! “Camp Takota,” the movie brainchild of YouTube’s ‘Holy Trinity’—Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart and Hannah Hart—was released online on Valentine’s Day and has found a new home on iTunes. The film is a new venture, both for the women and the world, as it marks the beginning of nontraditional media (YouTube) mixing with traditional media like cinema.

Due to the fandoms of the three stars, the film had a built-in fan base. Together, the Holy Trinity boasts at least 2.5 million subscribers, and if even half of that fan base bought the movie—$14.99 for the movie and a documentary on camptakota.com—that’s around $18 million already. The film is already on iTunes “Bestseller Chart,” alongside blockbusters  “12 Years a Slave” and “Dallas Buyers Club.”

1. Michelle Obama on “The Tonight Show”:

If there wasn’t reason enough to want the First Lady of the United States as your best friend, her appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show” might convince you. She took part in a skit alongside Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon, who were both in drag as little girls.

Once you get over the potentially scarring experience of Ferrell dressed as a small child, you find yourself falling into friendship with the glamorous First Lady. She manage to slip in little plugs about her various charities, and you can’t help but admire someone who can go up against comedy legends like Ferrell and Fallon. Later, Michelle was interviewed by Fallon and wore a stunning black jumpsuit. Well done, Michelle, well done — she deserves a round of applause.

6. Simon Cowell had his baby:

According to EOnline.com, the American Idol and X Factor judge has become a dad! Simon Cowell and his girlfriend Lauren Silverman had their first child together, a little boy. The baby, named Eric Selig Phillip Cowell, is named after Simon’s late father. The little bundle of joy has already experienced quite a splash of fame, when Cowell first revealed Silverman, then the wife of his best friend, to be pregnant with his child. But all seems well in the Cowell household. Let’s hope that becoming a dad will make Simon a little less harsh to those singing hopefuls!

5. “Orange is the New Black” season two:

The hit Netflix drama has a release date for season two! Rollingstone.com names the special day as June 6th. Season Two will take the focus away from Season One’s main character, Piper, and begin to delve into the story-lines of the other characters. Show-creator Jenji Kohan said, “As much as I love Piper and Taylor [the actress who portrays her] and her journey, I think people are interested in everyone’s journey.”

Prepare your life for a lot more of Crazy Eyes, Yoga Jones and Red!

4. The Olympians get romantic:

Not even the cold winds of Sochi, Russia can chill the fire burning in the Olympians’ hearts. This past Valentine’s Day, the Olympians got all romantic. U.S. Olympian Nick Goepper needed a Valentine, so the 19-year-old put it out into the world, hoping to find one. He wants something creative to catch his attention. Other Olympians took to Twitter and Instagram to get into the lovey-dovey spirit. Some were funny, some were sweet and some were downright aww-worthy.

Tell me in the comments below, who is your Olympic Valentine?

3. Frozen live performance:

Frozen just can’t let it go, can it? The smashing, now-iconic wonder that was the story of love between two sisters has taken it to the next level. The stars of the movie, including Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad, performed their songs live for an audience. It was a beautiful moment and showcased the actors’ impressive talents. Josh Gad hosted the event and belted out a few numbers of his own, but of course the gold star goes to Menzel for her beautiful rendition of the now-famous “Let It Go,” the song that has swept the our nation.

2. Bangerz tour kick-off:

Finally! Miley Cyrus began her Bangerz tour on Valentine’s Day in Vancouver. To kick things off, she made her entrance coming down a slide shaped like a tongue — because why not, right? — and bedazzled her way into our hearts with her crazy outfits. This tour could prove to be the solidification of a whole new Miley, and a celebration of her transformation so far. According to an EOnline.com article, Miley was having some pre-show nerves, tweeting, “I don’t know if it’s Valentines Day or #BangerzTour but I’m most definitely having a panic attack.” Aww, Miley!

1. Michael Sam and Ellen Page:

Taking the topic from Miley to something a little more serious, this week has been groundbreaking for the LGBTQ community. Two prominent public figures, NFL draftee Michael Sam and Ellen Page of “Juno” and “Inception” came out of the closet. Hailing from Univeristy of Missouri-Columbia, Sam is a defensive lineman and a top pick for the NFL. If drafted, Sam would be the first openly gay football player in the NFL. Page came out at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation Conference. In a beautiful, heart-warming speech, Page decided to stop “lying by omission” and genuinely thanked the HRCFC for all the work that they have done in helping her life and the lives of others.

6. Britney Spears Saves “How I Met Your Mother”:

We’re starting this week off with the Princess of Pop. After guest-starring on the popular CBS comedy, Britney Spears has been credited with saving “How I Met Your Mother” from getting canceled in its fourth season, according to HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. She portrayed Abby, a stalker-eque, crazed receptionist in love with Ted Mosby. Her appearance came right after the writers’ strike, and HIMYM was teetering on the edge of getting the axe. Luckily, Spears swept in and boosted ratings that have been high ever since. Now the show is nearing the end of their ninth and final season, with the last episode set to air on March 31.

5. Justin Bieber:

By now, everyone’s eyes are on Justin Bieber. From peeing in buckets to posing for pictures with ladies of the night, he is one train wreck that we just can’t give up. But his latest legal woes have a bit of a new development.

Police pulled Bieber over  for speeding late last month but it turns out he wasn’t actually speeding at the time he was pulled over. Although, according to his rented yellow Lamborghini, which has a built-in GPS system that recorded the car’s speed just hours before his arrest, Bieber was going over 136 mph at one point in his joyride. That, paired with the alcohol and drugs in his system, could have had serious repercussions. On the bright side, no one was hurt, and the pop star hasn’t become another prison cautionary tale (yet).

4. Jimmy Fallon’s last show:

Moving on to big and better things as the newest “The Tonight Show” host, Jimmy Fallon wrapped up his last episode on his “Late Night” show. In true Fallon fashion, he went out on a high note with jokes and music, saying he would really miss his 12:35 a.m. time slot and competing for viewers with a “vegan chopper commercial.” He ended his show with The Muppets — because of course why wouldn’t he — and got a little emotional in his monologue.

Fallon will replace Jay Leno as “The Tonight Show” host, as Seth Meyers moves into “Late Night.”

3. Sage Kotsenburg:

American Olympian Sage Kotsenburg won the Winter Olympics’ first gold medal by utilizing a move that he had never used before. And that’s all fine and dandy, but what I think the real story here is just how much of an awesome bro Kotsenburg is. He has a brother named Blaze, and he uses words like “mega” and “stoked.” It’s nice to see an Olympian with a real, honest personality. I’m not afraid to admit that I want him to be my best friend.

2. Pitch Perfect 2:

Pitch Perfect 2 is happening and I am getting all of the feels again. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson have signed on, and Kendrick even signed on without reading the script. I don’t even know if the movie even needs a script. In my opinion it only needs Kendrick reading her Tweets, Wilson speaking words, and a capella versions of “We Can’t Stop,” “Young and Beautiful” and “Timber.” You heard it here first, readers.

1. BU SnowBrawl 2014:

Okay, this might not be worldwide pop culture news, but it sure has a big impact on our little community. Wednesday, Boston University declared a snow day for the Charles River Campus, as I’m sure you are all aware. And if you’re not aware, then seriously what were you doing?

Anyway, in true snow day spirit, a Facebook event was created for one fantastic, gigantic mega-blowout snowball fight on the Esplanade. It was epic and beautiful. And — shameless plug — if you check out BU Today’s Instagram account and look up their SnowBrawl picture, you’ll see me. You’re welcome, world.
