Pop Culture Countdown: Beyoncé cries and another space movie starring Channing Tatum

Welcome to Monday! It may have been a rainy weekend, but it’s all toasty warm in pop culture land! So kick up your feet and settle in for a while as we talk about everything that you might’ve missed in the last week!

6. Chris Martin & Gwyneth Paltrow selling their London home:

In the aftermath of going public with their split, Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin are reportedly selling their $7 million London home. The pair have been working on their marriage for roughly a year, and despite rumors swirling of infidelity on the side of Paltrow, they insist the break-up is amicable. Paltrow also announced that she will be taking time off from Hollywood to be with her children and deal with the effects of the split.

5. Selena Gomez served with papers in Justin Bieber’s lawsuit:

Looks like Selena is being dragged into Justin’s legal mess! The beautiful brunette was served with court papers. She will testify in the lawsuit centering around Bieber’s alleged assault on a paparazzo while on a date with Gomez. However, Gomez could be grilled on more than just that one incident. Possible topics include Bieber’s use of illegal substances and any incidents of violence or anger.

4. New “Jupiter Ascending” trailer:

Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, released a new trailer, and it’s drawing me in! With the scenes of a vast galactic empire and some pretty sick fights — involving a wolfish Tatum — I’m excited for the film to be released in July. The film was directed by the Wachowskis, who brought us the Matrix films. It centers on Jupiter, played by Kunis, who is the next in line for a celestial throne, and the great battle to achieve her birthright. Pretty cool, right?

3. Zoe Saldana named the new face of L’Oreal:

Zoe Saldana is having one hell of a year! The Star Trek actress will be involved with the “Avatar” sequel, a NBC adaptation of “Rosemary’s Baby,” and now she joins the likes of Blake Lively and Lea Michele as L’Oreal Paris’s newest spokesmodel. Saldana was humbled by the offer, and credits her success to her family’s work ethic. We can’t wait to see the gorgeous L’Oreal pictures featuring the beauty!

2. Beyoncé cries at the last Mrs. Carter show:

If it were possible for the entire world to love Beyoncé more, it would be this moment. At her last show of 132 shows on her Mrs. Carter tour, Beyoncé humbly thanked her fans for giving her a career and lifting her up every time she fell. It is amazing to see a celebrity of Beyoncé’s stature acknowledge the power and special place of the fans in the making of fame. The past year of the tour has been a huge step for Beyoncé: the growth of her daughter Blue Ivy, and the release of her secret fifth album, BEYONCÉ.

1. Emma Watson “Noah” premiere; graduation in May:

Okay, full disclosure: this is my number 1 because I’ve been re-obsessed with the “Harry Potter” series lately and Emma Watson is my British queen. At the “Noah premiere, Watson revealed that she is due to graduate from Brown University in May, and she couldn’t be happier! She finished her degree in five years, balancing both the pressures of schoolwork and cinema. Emma says that graduating will free up her time considerably and, after filming her new movie “Regression,” she would love to break out on Broadway. Congrats, Watson!

Okay, so that’s all for this week! If there’s anything I missed, or anything you want to chime in on, feel free to comment down below!

Pop Culture Countdown: Jimmy Fallon, Pitch Perfect 2, and Snowbrawl 2014

6. Britney Spears Saves “How I Met Your Mother”:

We’re starting this week off with the Princess of Pop. After guest-starring on the popular CBS comedy, Britney Spears has been credited with saving “How I Met Your Mother” from getting canceled in its fourth season, according to HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. She portrayed Abby, a stalker-eque, crazed receptionist in love with Ted Mosby. Her appearance came right after the writers’ strike, and HIMYM was teetering on the edge of getting the axe. Luckily, Spears swept in and boosted ratings that have been high ever since. Now the show is nearing the end of their ninth and final season, with the last episode set to air on March 31.

5. Justin Bieber:

By now, everyone’s eyes are on Justin Bieber. From peeing in buckets to posing for pictures with ladies of the night, he is one train wreck that we just can’t give up. But his latest legal woes have a bit of a new development.

Police pulled Bieber over  for speeding late last month but it turns out he wasn’t actually speeding at the time he was pulled over. Although, according to his rented yellow Lamborghini, which has a built-in GPS system that recorded the car’s speed just hours before his arrest, Bieber was going over 136 mph at one point in his joyride. That, paired with the alcohol and drugs in his system, could have had serious repercussions. On the bright side, no one was hurt, and the pop star hasn’t become another prison cautionary tale (yet).

4. Jimmy Fallon’s last show:

Moving on to big and better things as the newest “The Tonight Show” host, Jimmy Fallon wrapped up his last episode on his “Late Night” show. In true Fallon fashion, he went out on a high note with jokes and music, saying he would really miss his 12:35 a.m. time slot and competing for viewers with a “vegan chopper commercial.” He ended his show with The Muppets — because of course why wouldn’t he — and got a little emotional in his monologue.

Fallon will replace Jay Leno as “The Tonight Show” host, as Seth Meyers moves into “Late Night.”

3. Sage Kotsenburg:

American Olympian Sage Kotsenburg won the Winter Olympics’ first gold medal by utilizing a move that he had never used before. And that’s all fine and dandy, but what I think the real story here is just how much of an awesome bro Kotsenburg is. He has a brother named Blaze, and he uses words like “mega” and “stoked.” It’s nice to see an Olympian with a real, honest personality. I’m not afraid to admit that I want him to be my best friend.

2. Pitch Perfect 2:

Pitch Perfect 2 is happening and I am getting all of the feels again. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson have signed on, and Kendrick even signed on without reading the script. I don’t even know if the movie even needs a script. In my opinion it only needs Kendrick reading her Tweets, Wilson speaking words, and a capella versions of “We Can’t Stop,” “Young and Beautiful” and “Timber.” You heard it here first, readers.

1. BU SnowBrawl 2014:

Okay, this might not be worldwide pop culture news, but it sure has a big impact on our little community. Wednesday, Boston University declared a snow day for the Charles River Campus, as I’m sure you are all aware. And if you’re not aware, then seriously what were you doing?

Anyway, in true snow day spirit, a Facebook event was created for one fantastic, gigantic mega-blowout snowball fight on the Esplanade. It was epic and beautiful. And — shameless plug — if you check out BU Today’s Instagram account and look up their SnowBrawl picture, you’ll see me. You’re welcome, world.

VS Fashion Show 2012

It’s that time of the year again: hot bods, corny dance moves and lingerie. Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is a must-see everywhere, if only for making fun of the ridiculous getups and cringing at the incredibly almost-too-skinny models. I watched the hour-long (is it really that short?!) fashion show with a group of friends Tuesday night who sat beside me alternating between snickering at the outlandish costumes and evaluating the nearly perfect models.

Let’s be real for a second, though: however much you make fun of VS models, you have to admit that they are beautiful. And however much you weep with jealousy at how beautiful they are (while simultaneously working gym-visits into your schedule), you have to recognize that they aren’t everything that they appear to be. Their diet probably consists of air and bell peppers… not the most appealing diet. Do you really want to give up pasta and chocolate the rest of your life, just to be skinny? Don’t answer that. The answer’s no. You’re desirable as you are.

Regardless of all of the body image problems that VS spurs, let’s take a look at how ridiculous (and entertaining) the show itself is. Last night, the show invited three stars to sing all of the runway models on and off the catwalk: Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber. All performers sang passionately at the drop-dead gorgeous women as they paraded towards the crowd (and watching television-viewers). Rihanna risked a few flirty side-brushing greetings at the ladies, Bruno Mars sang soulfully from the sidelines and Justin Bieber danced his way through the catwalk. (Hilarious side note: Beiber reportedly tweeted “jealous?” As the show was going on, as a jab to his most recent ex-girlfriend, the one and only Selena Gomez.)

Some of the earlier lingerie was sexy and subtle, while the later Pink portion of the show boasted fancy outfits and daring fashion statements. And, as the show does every year, it zoomed in on the lives of the mysterious and silent VS models. Each gave a unique back story and quip about how important VS modeling is to them. My favorite model of the night probably was Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. With silky-smooth skin, Whitely is the 5-foot-9 image of perfection, complete with ruby red lips, perfect bone structure and a smoldering look. Not to mention how well she rocks the VS lingerie.

All in all, the VS show last night was interesting, entertaining and visually delightful, as always. Of course, you can’t expect to get anything deep from watching an hour of glamor and celebrity appeal, but you can always expect an amusing time, some inspiration to get to the gym and a visual reminder of VS’s huge selection of lingerie that’s out there for your purchase.
